What Is Float Therapy?

A Powerful And Enjoyable Way To Bring A Sense Of Peace And Calm To Your Life.

While there are many ways to ‘switch off’ physical stress (and therapy is a terrific place to learn), Float Therapy is an effortless and fun way to do so!

Floating is a whole-body treatment where you experience buoyancy and a sense of weightlessness, in a reduced sensory environment, allowing you to enjoy a serene state of relaxation and peace. Floating feels like you’re suspended in a warm cloud, relieved of gravity, pressure, or external distractions.

Modern floating has its origins in the 1950’s, when psychiatrists became interested in the psychological benefits of reducing sensory stimulation. Now known as Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST), research has consistently demonstrated that floating greatly reduces stress and increases relaxation. Floating may also reduce blood pressure, heart rate, plasma cortisol, muscle tension, pain, depression, anxiety, and negative mood.

Our Flourish Float is a glorious 45-minute experience of complete sensory REST. The float bed and room are set to your body temperature so you’ll feel like you’re floating in a warm, soft hug.

You’ll tune out of the external world and become more aware of your inner experience – your heartbeat, your breath. This restorative float allows you to achieve a deeply meditative state which is intimately connected to your own inner awareness.

Flourish Sensate Float (45 Minutes)

Our 45-minute Flourish Sensate Float is a world-first combination of floating and the Sensate, a device that uses customised soundscapes to emit powerful infrasonic sound waves designed to soothe the nervous system.

The Sensate is pebble-shaped and sits on your chest, emitting vibrations reverberating your chest bone. Resonating inwards, these vibrations signal your body’s vagus nerve to relax. Flourish Self-Compassion Float (45 Minutes)

Our Flourish Self-Compassion Float combines a deeply relaxing float experience with your choice of guided self-compassion meditations designed to help you learn the gentle art of unconditional self-acceptance.

Self-compassion meditation is a form of mindfulness that teaches you to become your own best friend. Many of us have a harsh ‘inner judge’, and repeated self-criticism can lead to chronic stress, low self-esteem, depression, body image disturbance, eating disorders, isolation, and shame. Physiologically, self-criticism results in high levels of cortisol and adrenaline, the body’s ‘fight/flight’ response.

Self-compassion meditation releases oxytocin, our body’s ‘safety’ hormone. When our brains release oxytocin, we experience a sense of warmth, loving-kindness, calm, and connection.

What To Expect During A Dry Float Therapy Session

In the Flourish Float bed you are protected from the water by a warm, water-filled membrane, giving you a completely safe, hygienic, and convenient experience. The water is heated to match your body temperature, and the room temperature is also calibrated to ensure a sense of snug safety.

You can float in complete darkness, or choose to have a small light source. You can also request noise cancelling headphones to reduce external noise.

The unique combination of resting in the Flourish Float bed, in a quiet, dark (or dimly lit) space, allows your body’s sensorimotor system to relax.

Floating like this allows your brain to take a break from the hard work of tracking things like temperature, gravity, and body position, so you can drift into a liminal (sleep like) state. You may even fall asleep!

We’ll send you an email confirmation of your appointment and a text the day before to re-confirm your booking.

2. On The Day

Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your booking session so we can get you settled in.

Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes and remove all jewellery, watches and items with sharp edges, like belts.

You will be asked to remove your shoes for your float, but you can keep your clothes on.

3. Calm And Relaxation Awaits!

We’ll set up your float experience according to your preferences and then leave you to immerse yourself. A gentle bell will chime when your session is complete.

After your float, allow yourself some time to soak in the experience and transition back into the world. You’re welcome to lounge in our comfortable, tranquil waiting area.

Add A Post-Appointment Flourish Float to Your HealthCare Session

Coming to an appointment with a health professional (your psychologist or dietitian,) can be hard. It can be stressful to talk about difficult issues and some sessions may stir up uncomfortable emotions and even increase stress.

Rather than leaving your session in a heightened state, booking a post-session Float will soothe you, calm your nervous system, and activate your parasympathetic nervous system, leaving you feeling much more ready to face the world!

Flourish Float FAQ

How long are the dry float therapy sessions?

Each dry float session lasts for 45 minutes.

If you are doing a Sensate float or a Self Compassion float, the 45 minutes includes an average of 30 minutes of sensate/meditation sounds and a 15 minute of silent floating.

If you are doing a silent float the entire 45 minutes are in silence.

A gentle bell will sound at the conclusion of your session.

What should I wear?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You’ll be required to take off your shoes, jewellery and anything sharp before your float.

What if I am claustrophobic?

Our float room is the size of a small bedroom with a standard ceiling height. The Flourish Float bed has no enclosed ‘lid’, you’ll be floating on the equivalent of a king single bed.

What do you do after a float session?

After your float, allow yourself some time to soak in the experience and transition back into the world. You’re welcome to lounge in our comfortable, tranquil waiting area.

Is the room completely dark?

During your float, you can choose to float in complete darkness or have our small moon night light switched on. There’s also an option for you to choose dim lighting – whatever makes you feel most comfortable. Ideally, the less light, the less sensory stimulation and you’ll be able to enjoy the full benefits.

What is the weight limit for the Flourish Float?

The Flourish Float has been designed to accommodate most body sizes comfortably. The float bed has been custom-made with an upper weight limit of around 210kg.

Is there anything I should avoid before my Float session?

It is advisable to limit the consumption of caffeine prior to your Float, as this can stimulate you, making relaxation more difficult. We also recommend avoiding the use of alcohol before floating.
